A carved, armorial panel depicting a triumphant, seated Boudica styled figure wearing a flowing robe and plumed hat, flourishing a staff bearing a Spanish helmet; and a lion rampant brandishing a sword and arrows. The central arched panel is framed within decorative gadrooned and foliate borders and is surmounted by a pair of stylised dolphins between three rosette medallions. The panel relates to the Netherlands, Eighty Years War of Independence(1568–1648) a revolt of Seventeen Provinces of what are today the Netherlands, Belgium, and Luxembourg, against Philip II of Spain, the sovereign of the Habsburg Netherlands.

The arched rectangular central panel and pictorial, patriotic scene is typical of Dutch fireback designs. An image of a 17th century Dutch fireback with a similar depiction can be seen in the last image below.

A magnificent and enormous pair of huge bronze Edwardian Baroque panels each in two parts made for Gillows of Lancaster, the famous furniture and furnishings company founded in 1730 who later to became Waring and Gillow. They would have been part of a grand display stand at one of the Great International Exhibitions that occurred from the mid 19th century. Gillows was one of a number of first class manufacturing companies to provide work of the highest calibre for these exhibitions. It is not clear exactly which event these panels, some parts of which are missing, would have been made for but it is likely to have been either the London Exhibition of 1908 or the one in Ghent in 1913. The panels bear medallion copies of the medals that Gillows were awarded at various exhibitions from London,1851 to Paris,1900 and Brussels.

Extraordinarily the panels were only discovered in 2015 stored away in a dock-side warehouse in Liverpool the home of Warings. It is possible that they had remained there undisturbed and forgotten for all those years from the time they were dismantled at the exhibition and transported back to Liverpool.
    English, 1903 - 1914

  • Stock: 11284

A large and rare, highly ornate antique oak overmantel reminiscent of the style of the French designer Daniel Marot(1661–1752). The top with egg and dart moulding, carved acanthus scrolls and pendant drops above a quatrefoil opening framed by acanthus carved bolection moulding reserved on a diaper ground and flanked by scroll supports with heavy acanthus carving above a base section with a scrolling cartouche and carved strapwork and draperies. Photos before restoration and in it's original state with some carved elements missing.
    English mid 19th century.
Provenance: By repute originally removed from Alnwick Castle in the late 20th century and erected as an overmantel in a house in Alnwick.

Notes: In the second half of the 18th century Robert Adam carried out many alterations to Alnwick Castle. The interiors were largely in a Strawberry Hill Gothic style and not at all typical of his work, which was usually neoclassical in design. However in the 19th century Algernon, 4th Duke of Northumberland replaced much of the interiors with less ostentatious architecture designed by Anthony Salvin. According to the official website a large amount of Adam's work survives, but little or none of it remains in the principal rooms shown to the public, which were redecorated in an opulent Italianate style in the Victorian era by Luigi Canina.
