Stock No.15229
A pair of 19th century Chinese Qing Dynasty baluster vases of fine quality. Each vase is hand painted with sinuous designs of delightful stylised flowers and leaves wrapping around their bodies and the lids are surmounted by upright Foo Dogs resting their paws on small globes. Foo Dog masks with rings in their mouths can also be seen in pairs on the shoulders. Foo Dogs, or Chinese Guardian Lions, were believed to be protective forces, often found guarding the entrances to Temples and Imperial Palaces.
Chinese, mid-19th century.
Please not that one lid is a replacement of the same period and is a good but not identical match with the other.
