JOHN MOYR SMITH:
An important cast iron and brass mounted Register Grate Insert set with eight fine large Minton tiles by the designer John Moyr Smith (1839 - 1912), depicting scenes from The Waverly Novels written by Sir Walter Scott. From the bottom left each tile is an illustration of stories from the Novels as follows:
ROB ROY - In Glasgow Tolbooth;
THE ANTIQUARY - Sir Arthur and Dousterwivel;
IVANH0E - Death of Bois Guilbert;
GUY MANNERING - Meg Merrilees and Matteraick;
OLD MORTALITY- Morton and Burley;
FAIR MAID of PERTH - Bonthron accuses Rothsay;
FORTUNES of NIGEL - Nigel and King James;
THE TALISMAN - Sir Kenneth and the Dwarf.
The insert has a Diamond Mark 1880.

Notes: John Moyr Smith Architect, Artist, Designer & Ceramicist studied at the Glasgow School of Art from November 1857 and amongst his clients was the ceramic manufacturer Minton & Co (later Minton Hollins & Co).
