An exotically decorated Victorian cast iron and brass register grate ...foundry No C4738, model 2451. The hood embellished with a brass Eagle struggling with a Serpent, the most powerful of birds fighting the most dangerous of reptiles, representing the struggle between good and evil. Also found in mythology, on ancient Greek coins, on the Mexican National Flag & in one of Aesop's Fables. The side panels are embossed with flowers & foliage and surmounted by brass birds soaring skyward. Provenance: Humby Hall in Great Humby, Lincolnshire.
