A tall and boldly carved walnut trumeau fireplace surround in the Renaissance style. The high simple panelled trumeau has a large moulded cornice.The upper frieze, with a central cartouche flanked by floral scrolls, is set above the main frieze upon which is carved, in high relief, a fire breathing salamander the heraldic beast of Francois I of France and the symbol of survival. The jambs are fronted by a pair of stop fluted columns with ornate scrolled acanthus capitals.
