An unusually large and impressive Louis XV period fireplace, richly carved in Breche Violette marble, decorated with large central scrolled shell cartouche and scrolled fluted jambs beneath a serpentine shelf.
Provenance: The Pink Drawing Room, Bath House, Piccadilly, London residence of Sir Julius and Lady Wernher. He left Germany at the age of 21, settled in Britain then went to the Kimberley Diamond Fields in South Africa where he assembled vast wealth becoming in the process a prominent member of the British Establishment. Bath House, the interior of which was decorated by Georges Hoentschel (1855-1915) a prominent Parisian architect and decorator, was his town house and Luton Hoo filled with art treasures, built by Robert Adam in the 18th century and rebuilt by Robert Smirke, was his country residence.
