Stock No: 15677

A monumental Victorian arch fireplace in dramatically veined Portoro marble. Striking in its simplicity, the fireplace is centered by a keystone and the arch is framed by two boldly carved spandrels.
English, c.1860.

Notes: Varieties of Portoro Marble have been found in different parts of the world but the marble used to make this chimneypiece is of the highest quality and could only have come from the quarries on the Island of Palmaria, in the Gulf of La Spezia, Italy. This marble was discovered and first extracted in Roman times and is rightly regarded worldwide as a luxury marble because of it's quality and the distinctive black and gold veining.
