Stock No.13137

A pair of tall antique terracotta pillars or gate piers. The pineapple and acanthus finials, with rope twist bases, sit on plain caps with arched clam shell cornices above ornate columns decorated with branching stylised foliage and flowers and bands of acanthus and laurel. They are supported on large bases with stylised clams to each of the four corners. The missing concrete base can be reproduced if required. As found. Purportedly made by Mark Henry Blanchard & Company. English, circa 1870.

Notes: Mark Blanchard (1816-1892) worked as an apprentice with the Coade Company until around 1839 when he established his own works in 1840 at 74, Blackfriars Road, Lambeth in London. In 1883 he moved his works to Bishops Waltham so he could be nearer his source of clay where he continued to produce a range of terracotta garden ornaments his earlier items having a buff colour similar to Coadestone the current vogue of the Victorians.

Westland Note: We have only now been able to offer these for sale as for the past few years a pair of blue tits have been in residence each springtime and we left them in peace. They have since moved elsewhere.
