  • Stock: 16488

A fine George III giltwood and carton-pierre wall mirror in the manner of James and Robert Adam. The slender frame encloses the rectangular plate and is surmounted by opposing griffins centred by a slender urn and ears of wheat.

English, c.1770. Provenance: The Estate of the late Sir George Dowty (1901-1975, inventor, engineer and businessman) and Lady Marguerite Dowty, thence by family descent.

Notes: Carton-Pierre is effectively a type of papier mache, popularised in the 18th century for its ability to be moulded to create adornments for mirrors or even ceiling cornices, as a cheaper alternative to plaster.

Final image credit: Office of Robert and James Adam, 'Design for a Pier Glass, 1772, Photo: © Sir John Soane’s Museum, London”.

Each chair has a foliate scrollwork top rail over barley twist supports which enclose beautifully inlaid panels with a number of mythological creatures shown within an arabesque border. An unusual George I 'mulberry' cabinet in the manner of Coxed and Woster. The cross banded and veneered walnut doors reveal a fine fitted interior which is also beautiful veneered, including a number of hidden drawers, which are beautifully scumbled.
    English, c.1710, with restorations.

Notes: It is now widely accepted that much furniture which was commonly thought to be 'mulberry' is in fact stained burr elm, walnut, maple or alder. The popularity of these veneers in the 1690-1730 period is thought to stem from its tortoiseshell like appearance. If mulberry wood is ebonised to reinforce its markings it does not take the staining effectively whereas with elm, walnut, maple and alder the porous parts of the woods retain the dark streaks giving this dramatic tortoiseshell-like appearance.

A set of eight framed steel engravings after Thorvaldsen's monumental marble frieze, depicting the "Entrance of Alexander the Great into Babylon". Completed in 1812, this subject was chosen by the marble sculptor to decorate the Palazzo Quirinale in Rome, before a visit from Napoleon. The emperor was so taken with the masterpiece, that he commissioned a replica for the Louvre in Paris, over thirty three metres in length. The sculptor created another version for the Christiansborg Palace in Copenhagen also.

This set of eight engravings faithfully reproduces the quality of this great work of sculpture, which includes a couple of single figures, later conceived by Thorvaldsen, to increase the scale of the subject for the later commissions. Samuel Amsler (1791-1848) after drawings by Johann Friedrich Overbeck (1789-1869) Published by J.H. Felsing, Darmstadt,1835.
